Inside Serbia’s Abandoned Migrant Camps

 

I was on the ground near the Serbia–Hungary border, where rival smuggling gangs had turned migration routes into war zones.

Our investigation took us into abandoned buildings littered with cartridges and rubbish - some still listed as restaurants on Google. Locals had feared for their lives. Some still did when we arrived.

As the EU and Balkan states tighten controls, the consequences for those in transit - and those left behind - are only intensifying.
